And with each test at the ballot box it seems he can’t. Republicans have been crushed in elections around the country. Some defeats, like that of the alleged paedophile Roy Moore in Alabama, are unlikely to be repeated; others, like the gains across Virginia in November, indicate more sustained progress. There has been a relatively consistent swing of about 15 points to Democrats in state and congressional races that has seen them take over 40 seats from Republicans, including in states such as Florida and Wisconsin where Clinton lost in 2016. Midterm elections are almost never good for the party in the White House. On current trends, this November will be a disaster for Republicans…”

If we don’t, your wealth and political connections determine whether you are even threatened with punishment.

You could argue that in America, that already happens. Minorities and the poor face more arrests, convictions, and longer jail terms than the wealthy majority. And while this is indeed true and disturbing, and as much as this topic needs to be discussed, it’s tangential to the main issue, the question of whether political office, not just skin color or bank account value, can be used as an honest to goodness, literal get-out-of-jail card even for high crimes and misdemeanors. Because if it does, then democracy will die overnight since a court system to which those in power are no longer accountable is the final step in every autocracy or dictatorship cementing their power over the long term, dismantling the very concept of separation of powers.

It gives criminals every incentive to barge their way into high office, then, to preserve their place, intimidate and silence the opposition. Imagine if Trump couldn’t be indicted for money laundering until he stepped down. He would unleash his followers on every opposing politician and pressure the DOJ to investigate and disqualify them. This is the same thing that happened to the popular Russian lawyer and investigative journalist Alexei Navalny when he tried to challenge Putin. He keeps getting attacked and jailed and has been slapped with a criminal conviction that bars him from running for any public office, despite the case against him being questionable, to put it mildly…”

The payday lending and title loan industry has been battling the CFPB since Congress created the bureau in 2010 — and the fight has intensified since the bureau started crafting rules to regulate short-term lending in 2015. Since then, payday lenders have given $1.5 million to congressional lawmakers and another $300,000 to the Republican National Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee. The industry also spent another $6.2 million on politics at the state level to combat regulation over the same time period, according to the National Institute on Money in State Politics. (A patchwork system of state-based laws currently governs the industry; a handful of states ban payday loans entirely.)

The industry’s shrewdest investment may have been the money it delivered to Trump after he won the 2016 election. While payday lenders weren’t lining up to support Trump during the presidential election, in January after Trump’s win, Advance America, the nation’s biggest payday lender, donated $250,000 to Trump’s inauguration. Title loan magnate Rod Aycox and his wife each donated $500,000 for the event; payday lender Checks into Cash chipped in another $25,000. In November, the Community Financial Services Association of America, the industry’s trade group, announced its annual conference and expo would be held at the Trump National Doral resort in Miami.

As that money flowed to Trump and his business empire, the Trump administration has made moves to help the industry — in particular, it took decisive action to undermine the CFPB’s previous efforts to regulate lenders…”
